Oceania is a region of significant research and student mobility activity for U of T, with particularly strong links with Australian universities.

Partnerships in the Region

Indigenous studies is one of the important areas of joint research, teaching and learning with our Australian partners, with a thriving set of collaborations in Indigenous Health.

The University of Melbourne is one of U of T’s Global Research Alliance partners – a comprehensive partnership which encompasses collaboration in teaching, learning, research, and institutional policies and procedures. U of T has also developed a strong partnership with the University of Sydney, focusing on sustainability through a joint commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and building on a solid foundation of strong research compatibility.

U of T students consistently choose to participate in global learning opportunities with our vast network of partners in Australia and New Zealand, such as the University of Queensland, ANU, University of Western Australia, University of New South Wales, and the University of Auckland.

Partnership Highlights

University of Melbourne

The strategic partnership between U of T and the University of Melbourne is built on a foundation of similarities at the institutional level, a long history of faculty to faculty collaboration due to compatibility of research expertise and a commitment to facilitating global learning opportunities for our students. One of our flagship projects is focused on offering opportunities for graduate students to enroll in joint PhD programs where they benefit from the unique research expertise and specialized facilities at both institutions, experience two different research cultures, expand their academic networks, and increase their future employability, either in academia or beyond.

In 2021, U of T, the University of Melbourne and the University of Manchester formed a new trilateral alliance. The alliance aims to facilitate deeper collaboration between the three partners, drawing on joint expertise and resources.

University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is a key partner for U of T and, in 2019, the two institutions first contributed matching funds to support collaborative research initiatives in areas of mutual strength and shared interest. These areas include nephrology, Indigenous treaties, robotics, the socioeconomic impact of mobile technologies, and cannabis policies. Both institutions also provide funding to support collaborative academic and research initiatives in Indigenous public health and Indigenous studies.

The student exchange program between U of T and USydney is among U of T’s most active exchange programs. In 2018, U of T and USYD have designated each other as super exchange partners which allows up to 50 students from each institution to participate in an exchange annually. Students from USyd and UofT also engage with each other through Global Classrooms.

UofT and USyd have launched three joint research calls to foster research connections across a broad spectrum of disciplines, with a focus on UN’s Sustainable Developments Goals.
